Son Mesquida is a small quite village on the largest Spanish island of Mallorca in the
Mediterranean Sea. Lying close to the sleepy little town of Felanitx it is known for its rich vegetation and unique
lifestyle. Its neighboring villages are Portocolom, Santanyi, Colonia and St. Jordi. All these villages are
scattered around Felanitx and are well known for their pubs, restaurants and the delicious food they serve.
Felanitx is also famous for its Sunday market, in which you will find everything you need including classic
Mallorcan art and handicrafts. There are increasing number of visitors coming every year to these villages to enjoy
the rural essence of Mallorca. The most popular tourist sites in Son Mesquida are St. Salvador church and the
fincas. Other tourist attractions are horse riding, mountain biking, golf courses and other outdoor sports. Son
Mesquida is an excellent place to holiday with friends and families.
Although finca is usually translated as farm, the word has several meanings. A finca can refer to a large country estate or a small rural
property. However, in common use fincas are old traditional homes built in villages decades ago. They are
usually big in size and have at least one floor. They are independent houses built with bricks and cement.
Most of the fincas have been renovated and are given on lease for a few weeks or months to tourists visiting
Son Mesquida, Felanitx. Some Mallorquins (locals of the village) owning these fincas prefer to live in it the
way it is. Due to its old construction and wear and tear, many fincas need renovation as few tourists like to
stay in olden style homes.
A finca is usually a massive houses with at least 3 – 5 bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms. It has a big
open terrace and a large swimming pool. The dining room is close to the kitchen, which has electronic equipment
needed by a household. Most fincas have 2 bedrooms with bathrooms on the ground floor and the others on the top
floor. Most fincas are without air-conditioners as they are hardly required. Therefore you are unlikely to come
across fincas having air-conditioners unless their owners are extremely keen on making them look more attractive
and modern. The climate of Son Mesquida is neither too hot nor too cold. The entrance to these fincas looks very
interesting as the owners try to make it different from others and more fascinating. Since fincas are independent
houses and located in villages they have their own water storage tanks. These days modern fincas come with a
generator for power backup. Unlike a few decades ago electricity is not much of a problem. Electricity has reached
most parts of the rural Mallorca.
The non-renovated fincas may look shabby from outside but the interior is decorated with all modern equipment.
Some finca owners prefer to leave the interior also untouched to preserve its rural feel.
In recent years fincas have been much sought after by foreign real estate buyers. Fincas are fast turning into
resorts full of peace and quiet away from the hustle of the coastline.
Until about twenty years ago fincas could be bought for very little. However, due to the increasing interest in
them the prices have risen considerably in recent years.
